According to an international search conducted by the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Institute of Experimental Neurology, and funded by IMF (Italian Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis), the expression of the TrkB neurotrophin receptor is induced in astrocytes of white matter lesions in patients and mice with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).
Surprisingly, the mice lacking TrkB, particularly in astrocytes, were protected from neurodegeneration induced - EAE. Thus, studying the animal model of multiple sclerosis in genetically modified mice, researchers found a striking mechanism: the receptor TrkB on astrocytes results in the production of nitric oxide, a crucial responsibility for damage from multiple sclerosis since it leads to death of neurons.
These results suggest that TrkB expression on astrocytes may represent a novel target for neuroprotective therapies in MS.
